Healthy teeth are vital to the development of a child’s speaking and chewing abilities. The lack of a good oral hygiene routine can lead to infections, diseases, and structural problems of the teeth. The good news is parents can equip their children with the tools and knowledge to make their excellent oral care routines enjoyable.

Moms and dads can watch fun movies and read exciting bedtime stories about dental hygiene with their children. Play a fun song or use a timekeeper to ensure your children brush for two minutes twice every day. Children can be encouraged to pick a brush of their favourite colours and toothpaste of their favourite flavours while shopping.

Trips to the dentist can be dreadful but planning an exciting activity following the visit can divert the focus of your kids. They will begin to think about the fun after-plans instead of getting nervous about their appointments. We have listed a few components that will promote dental health in your kids.

Cleaning the teeth

You should start educating your children about proper dental hygiene between the ages of one and two. Buy them a child-size toothbrush and only use water to clean their teeth twice a day.

Teach your kids to brush their teeth, gums and tongue. Children need help brushing their teeth until they are seven or eight. You must switch out their brushes within three to six months. Flossing once a day is an excellent practice for both kids and adults.

You may use a little toothpaste that does not contain fluoride to brush your child’s teeth since it’s safe for them to swallow. You may start giving your child a small amount of toothpaste that contains fluoride once they are old enough to spit it out.

Fluoride

A high amount of fluoride intake can be detrimental to your child’s health and cause tooth stains but the intake of fluoride present is our water is in fact beneficial. The consumption of some fluoride alleviates cavities in baby teeth and adult teeth. It strengthens the tooth enamel and hardens the teeth.

The majority of children get fluoride from their drinking water and if you use water filters in your homes, make sure they do not remove fluoride from the water. Your child can take an oral fluoride supplement if your drinking water lacks the chemical formula. Dentists also give children a fluoride varnish and cleaning.

However, inform your kids never to swallow fluoride mouthwash or fluoride toothpaste, since these products contain the chemical in higher amounts.

Cavities

Sugary drinks and foods can turn into acid and deteriorate your teeth, making them vulnerable to cavities. Your child may be prone to developing cavities if they have ongoing health issues, were prematurely born or had a low birth weight, have brown or white spots on their teeth, and do not visit the dentist often.

Cavities occur in the form of minuscule hollows in our teeth when bacteria and germs build up in our mouth. These problems are common in children since their teeth are harder to brush. Limiting the amount of sugar intake can prevent cavities in both kids and adults.

Oral Safety

Wearing a mouthguard is mandatory if your child plays any physical sports. Mouthguards are smooth retainers made from plastic to protect the player’s teeth and lips. Custom made mouth guards are available at most dental clinics.
